March Metamorphosis and Wailin' Waylon

Is the winter finally passing? Are these stirring spring winds finally beginning to crack the icy shell of our complacency?

Thank God for change. Thank God for reflection. And thank God for Waylon Jennings.

Recently, I've been listening to a lot of the good old boy's back catalogue and although I am, by no means, a country bumpkin - Good GOSH, this man could write a zinger of a tune. I think it's important to familiarize yourself with something that stumps or scares you.

New ideas are in the crocker. Songs are starting to force their way out of the wintery woodwork and my outlook seems a bit more positive. My guitar is getting used and my fingers are rebuilding their callouses.

I've also been making my way through the Tribe Called Quest documentary and although it's hard to watch (late at night, while I'm falling asleep), there is something so magnetic about the beats and rhymes of Q Tip and Phife.

And although country and rap seem super far away from each other in terms of the taste spectrum, I see so many links between the two. They're both an art form where renegade-esque wild horses run free and explore their lands and their sounds.

My friend Marc McCormick, who passed away a few years ago, used to call himself the Rappin' Cowboy.

I'm feeling more and more like a rappin' cowboy every damn day.
